ABINGTON, PA — Abington Township is getting some well-deserved love from national media.

Abington was among just two towns in all of Pennsylvania to make the Money magazine's coveted list of "Best Places To Live In America" for 2019.
Abington was 74th on the list. The other Pennsylvania town, Shadyside, in the Pittsburgh area, came in 94th.

Abington was 74th on the list. The other Pennsylvania town, Shadyside, in the Pittsburgh area, came in 94th.

"74 is good, but clearly there is room for some improvement," Abington Commissioner Mike Thompson shared via social media Tuesday. "Coming in October and November- community meetings to help us understand where you want Abington to be by 2035."

What made Abington stick out from its competitors? The new rankings, released Monday in partnership with Realtor.com, were compiled by looking at more than 160,000 data points, including economic health, cost of living, diversity, public education, crime, and income.

Abington was ranked the 49th best school district in Pennsylvania in a recent ranking by data compiler Niche. That's 11th in Montgomery County, but it was close behind many of its nearby competitors. A US News report places Abington as the 47th best in PA, and among the upper echelon of schools nationwide, with a 1,316th overall ranking (out of some 17,000 in the study).

Abington is also the only school district in Montgomery County to not raise its taxes for the 2019-20 school year, something that's hardly easy to overlook for the cost of living category.

The township's economic health is boosted by a diverse spread of shopping districts, ranging from the Willow Grove Mall to smaller neighborhood economic centers. Philadelphia is immediately next door, and residents are linked to the region via SEPTA bus and rail lines. This has spurred development, but homes remain generally affordable, especially when compared to nearby suburbs.
